Safiyyah Nawaz, PhD

I'm Safiyyah, an interdisciplinary researcher and creative practitioner interested in understanding how we experience and find meaning through art, music and culture. I am trained in music psychology and neuroaesthetics, and I work collaboratively with researchers across disciplines including cognitive science, computing and museum studies. My primary work examines how music shapes the way we form and retrieve autobiographical memories, which you can learn more about in my research page.

As a self-taught creative, I explore the intersection of art, science and technology through both research and creative practice, with an emphasis on creating work that is meaningful, accessible and socially impactful. I am especially interested in decolonial approaches to psychological research, open science and citizen science. Check out Memory Records, my current passion project, for an example of this work.

I welcome opportunities for collaboration, partnerships or speaking engagements. Get in touch for more information!
